Arts Center of Battle Creek:
The Art Center of Battle Creek opened its doors in 1948. This year the Art Center celebrates 64 years devoted to providing the community with arts and culture! Since its founding, the mission of the Art Center of Battle Creek has been to present high quality programs in the visual arts for the enrichment, education and enjoyment of the citizens of Battle Creek, Michigan and beyond. The Art Center is extremely excited to host the ASAA Retrospective Art Exhibition as the community is highly enthusiastic about aviation and aviation art. Viewing the retrospective exhibition will not only be a once in a lifetime opportunity to see such a large collection of ASAA winning paintings in one setting, a critique session given by top Artist Fellows in the ASAA will take place during the forum, designed to explain the 'whys' and 'hows' of great aviation art so as better to enhance the attendees talents.

West Michigan School of Aviation:
The College of Aviation offers the only comprehensive aviation program at a public university in Michigan. . With over 700 undergraduate students, this is one of the largest aviation programs in the nation. Backed by over 60 years of its school history and industry reputation, the College of Aviation is a powerful force in the future of American aviation training. The College of Aviation's vision is to establish and maintain state-of-the-art, world-class professional aviation programs that are among the best in the world. It examines the very ways of teaching and pioneering revolutionary new methods of instruction designed to improve a pilot's ability to fly and to work efficiently with a crew. The College of Aviation produces graduates who think critically, communicate effectively, and participate meaningfully and ethically in the dynamic field of aviation. ASAA will receive first hand insight into the workings of this great establishment conducted by Western Michigan School of Aviation alumni, ASAA's own Captain Rich Dann, Naval Aviation's "Captain Centennial".

Duncan Aviation: Duncan Aviation is the largest, family-owned maintenance, repair and overhaul facility in the world, providing complete support, modification, refurbishment and acquisition services for business aircraft. As an aircraft service provider supporting the aviation needs of government and business operators and other service providers, it services major and minor airframe inspections, engine maintenance, major retrofits for cabin and cockpit systems, full paint and interior services and pre-owned aircraft sales and acquisitions. ASAA will be honored to tour a general and commercial aviation business.

West Michigan Glass Art Center: The West Michigan Glass Art Center (formerly known as West Michigan Glass Society) was founded in 2002 by a local group of glass artists. Current membership includes 210 area emerging and professional glass artists, students and friends of glass who love the magical material of glass and the mysterious process of learning to shape glass to reflect our creativity.
The Glass Art Center sponsors public events designed to increase the community awareness and exposure to glass art. The Center offers glass art classes and workshops in glass blowing, lampworking, stained glass, mosaics, fused glass and sandblasting. Glass is a very interesting and demanding medium whose qualities respond to changes in heat and atmosphere. ASAA has her own resident artist, Gary Elshoff, specializing in stained glass. This tour includes a demonstration and hands on experience in creating
glass art to take home.

Six Fabulous Classes/Workshops/Sketching Opportunities
We have an exciting range of presenters by some of ASAA's most experienced artists, specializing in a variety of mediums such as watercolor, oils, and woodcarving.
Time is scheduled for
hands-on workshops and drawing and painting sessions.

Retrospective Discussion

Contrast
Keith Ferris

We will spend several hours at the Arts Center of Battle Creek for a discussion of the works on display. Artists will rotate through the exhibition, where they will have the opportunity to discuss the works and overall show in detail with Keith Ferris, John Clark, Paul Rendel, and Charles Thompson, giving their unique perspective on color, contrast, light, composition and overall aesthetic appeal of the exhibit. This is sure to be a valuable learning opportunity for all those who attend.

ASAA Founder Keith Ferris will lead a class on the importance of careful understanding of contrasts and their uses in aviation art, including numbers and relative sizes of elements , shapes, values, color and light in developing your composition.

A Three Dimensional Perspective
Paul Rendel

Telling the Story
Michael O'Neal

In the great tradition of Walt Jefferies, this session will challenge artists to listen, imagine, compose and illustrate. Listen to an Aviation Story from WW I. Imagine the scene, context & action. Compose & Illustrate the event in a way that tells the story. Michael O'Neal will lead you in a sketching session that will challenge your mind's eye to see the scene described and produce the quick impressions of the story.
Paul Rendel will introduce us to his world of 3D art relating the importance of his building and flying his own airplane for 30 years in understanding and depicting flight, his sculpture commission experience and how his professional wood carving, including huge eagle sculptures have all influenced his approach to his career in art. In his presentation, Paul will also discuss his full-size bronze sculpture of the famous poet John Milton, showing his diversity in mediums.
Artist Feature
Larry Manofsky
Larry Manofsky will entertain us while detailing his background in aviation leading to his remarkable career as professional pilot, as NASA Instructor and subsequent life which has shaped him into the aviation artist we know and love today.
Sketching and Painting Time: scheduled at the Kalamazoo Air Zoo. With over fifty historic aircraft and many interesting exhibits and artifacts on site, there will be plenty of subjects to choose from to practice your sketching/painting skills.
Youth Art Camp
Priscilla Messner-Patterson

The Kalamazoo Air Zoo is excited to host our annual Youth Art Camp this year, giving the local young artists an opportunity to work with experienced ASAA artists in the fundamentals of aviation art.
The Kalamazoo Air Zoo

The Air Zoo is a highly charged, multi-sensory atmosphere that goes beyond anything you've ever seen. It's like no place else on Earth! Voted the "Best Place to Take Out-of- Towners" and "Best Place to Spend a Day with Your Family" three years in a row, the Air Zoo features more than 50 rare and historic aircraft, amusement park-style rides, Full-Motion Flight Simulators, Real-D 3D/4-D Missions Theater, as well as historical exhibits and educational activities. You'll see a Curtiss P-40 Warhawk. Gaze up at an awesome F-18. You'll get up close and personal with an overpowering F-14 Tomcat, the star of Top Gun. And you'll stand face-toface with the SR-71 Blackbird spy plane, still unmatched in speed and altitude.

On October 1, 2011, the Air Zoo expanded yet again by opening a 50,000-square-foot addition on its Main Campus. The expansion features new and current exhibits, aircraft and space artifacts. It houses Space: Dare to Dream, an interactive exhibit that celebrates the dreamers who dared to find answers to our existence, along with the history of space exploration. It also contains the MSSC, an exhibit about women in aviation and space (including the WASP) and World War II aircraft that were originally housed at the Air Zoo's East Campus. The addition features a 4,000-square-foot archive and an expanded library as well.

Americana

We will be in the heart of Breakfast Cereal Country and have the opportunity to attend the
Cereal Parade
in downtown Battle Creek as well as the Cereal Festival where the attendants can sit together at the longest breakfast table in America!

If breakfast is not your thing, you may be interested in visiting the
Gilmore Car Museum
in Lansing. What started out as a hobby has become a virtual city includes eight historic barns, a re-created 1930s service station, a small town train station, and nearly three miles of paved roads. It isn't uncommon for guest to catch a glimpse of one of the vintage cars or the authentic London double-decker bus in motion. Besides experiencing the wonderful collection of automobiles, you might find yourself reliving (or even making a few) childhood memories viewing the nearly 75 vintage pedal cars on exhibit. One of North America's largest displays of automotive hood ornaments and name badges can also be found in the combined collections of The Gilmore and CCCA museums.
